It's like a cheap, reliable, easily-upgradable Audi Allroad.

I meant in the cheapness/reliability category.

I picked one up in need of headgaskets (ok only one, but who'd only change one?) for $1300.
Lucky me, it had just had the clutch done and brakes front and rear (shitty raybestos but better than nothing), new Toyo snow tires (decent Michelin all seasons included too). Ended up needing a new filler neck ($15 at pick-n-pull). Did the work myself, and gotta say, one of the easiest cars I've ever worked on. I work on Lexus' for a living, and this thing was cake by comparison. Been driving it for a couple months now, runs like a top. Snowboards fit in the trunk, wicked driving up to Whistler.

If you were buying for the long haul - who has the parts available longer? Volvo or Subaru?

Seriously, if your somewhat mechanically inclined, buying a Subaru with a blown head gasket is the best deal out there. Stupid easy cars to work on.
